Job Description

Research Associate - Cryogenic Electron Microscopy/Materials Science Job ID 6114 Location SLAC - Menlo Park, CA Full-Time Temporary **SLAC Job Postings** **Position Overview** The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has an opening for a postdoctoral Research Associate (RA) with research interests in the development of cryogenic electron microscopy methods. Our Cryogenic Electron Microscopy & Bioimaging department is focused on the research development of cryogenic electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) methods. Typically, these methods are applied to biological systems, but there is a growing interest in their application to materials science samples. Here, the cryogenic sample preparation and subsequent cryogenic processing and imaging helps prevent radiation damage and preserves systems in a more native state, potentially even in operando. The lab of Johanna Weker specializes in the use of x-ray characterization techniques to understand failure modes of rechargeable batteries of varying chemistries, precisely the type of material science system that would benefit from Cryo-EM investigation. Our labs are currently searching for a research associate to work at the interface of our two groups to develop Cryo-EM methods and workflows to preserve and image material science systems by Cryo-EM. **Your specific responsibilities include:** + Interface with Dr. Dahlberg and Dr. Weker as well as other members of the lab to adapt Cryo-EM methods to material science samples. + Incorporate advanced sample characterization techniques (EELS, EDX etc.) routinely employed in materials science at room-temperature to cryogenic conditions. + Develop freezing protocols for material science samples. + Develop FIB-SEM protocols for sectioning material science samples. + Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication and present ongoing work to colleagues and/or academic conferences. Note: The Research Associate role is a fixed term staff position. Appointment duration is 1 year fixed term, with the possibility of extension.
